Instructions:
- Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, lift the front of the vehicle with a jack and secure on jack stands; remove the wheel.
- Locate the inner tie rod end and apply penetrating oil to fasteners as needed.
- Remove the cotter pin and nut from the outer tie rod end, then separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using a tie rod end puller or pickle fork.
- Mark or measure the distance/number of turns between the inner and outer tie rod to preserve alignment, then unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod.
- Loosen and remove the retaining nut or clamp that secures the inner tie rod to the steering rack; use the appropriate inner tie rod tool if required.
- Unscrew the inner tie rod from the steering rack and remove it from the vehicle.
- Compare the new inner tie rod to the old unit to confirm correct orientation and hand (right/left), then thread the new inner tie rod onto the steering rack to the same depth as the original.
- Torque the inner tie rod retaining nut to the manufacturer’s specification and install any retaining clips or clamps.
- Reinstall the outer tie rod onto the new inner tie rod using the measured turns to approximate original alignment, then tighten the outer tie rod nut and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure proper toe settings and prevent premature tire wear.
