The Gas Tank – 40 Gallon is an OE-style replacement fuel tank designed for 1974–1981 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Suburban models, including both 2WD and 4WD Squarebody applications. This large-capacity tank restores factory fitment while delivering extended driving range for full-size Squarebody Suburban builds.
Manufactured as an AMD OE replacement, this fuel tank is stamped from high-quality rust-resistant steel and finished with a protective zinc coating to help resist corrosion. Each tank is formed with the correct factory-style shape, ribs, mounting holes, flanges, and curvature to mirror original GM production specifications. Proper stamping ensures accurate alignment with factory mounting locations and surrounding chassis components.
All AMD fuel tanks are pressure tested for leaks prior to release, supporting reliable fuel containment and long-term durability. This tank features a non-baffled design, consistent with original production for applicable Suburban configurations of this era.
With its substantial 40-gallon capacity, this tank is ideal for extended highway driving, towing, or long-distance travel where additional fuel range is beneficial. It replaces GM part number 475429, restoring the correct high-capacity configuration used in 1974–1981 Squarebody Suburban models.
Designed specifically for classic Chevy and GMC Suburban restoration projects, this fuel tank delivers factory-style construction, proper fitment, and increased range capability while maintaining correct underbody appearance.
Auto Metal Direct is a team of true car guys with years of experience in sheet metal reproduction, car restoration and paint/body work. We believe that quality is not subjective! Our mission is to provide the best customer experience for the Ford, Mopar and GM classic car markets - both in products and in service.
Our panels are made from proper gauge steel and include all correct-as-original clips, tabs, flanges, bends and seams. Each time a prototype body panel comes off of a new tooling, we test fit it on a car. The marked up prototype is then used to change and improve the tools, and a new prototype is produced. This procedure might be repeated multiple times but, once the part is finally approved, you can be assured of a quality part.
