The Gas Tank – 40 Gallon is an OE-style replacement fuel tank designed for 1982–1986 gasoline models and 1982–1991 diesel models of the Chevy GMC Squarebody Suburban. Engineered to replicate original GM specifications, this tank restores proper factory fitment while delivering maximum fuel capacity for long-wheelbase Suburban applications.
This tank fits 1982–1986 gas-powered Suburban models and 1982–1991 diesel Suburban models, making correct engine identification important before ordering. Designed specifically for full-size Squarebody Suburban 2WD and 4WD platforms, it provides the high-capacity fuel storage originally offered for extended-range use.
Manufactured as an AMD OE replacement, this fuel tank is stamped from high-quality rust-resistant steel and finished with a protective zinc coating to help resist corrosion. Each tank features the correct factory-style shape, ribs, mounting holes, flanges, and curvature to mirror original production. Proper stamping ensures accurate alignment with factory mounting locations and surrounding chassis components.
All AMD fuel tanks are pressure tested for leaks prior to release, supporting dependable fuel containment and long-term durability. This tank features a non-baffled design, consistent with original production for applicable carbureted and diesel configurations during this era.
With its substantial 40-gallon capacity, this tank is ideal for towing, long-distance driving, or restoration projects where extended fuel range is a priority. It maintains factory underbody appearance while delivering the large-capacity performance Squarebody Suburban owners expect.
Auto Metal Direct is a team of true car guys with years of experience in sheet metal reproduction, car restoration and paint/body work. We believe that quality is not subjective! Our mission is to provide the best customer experience for the Ford, Mopar and GM classic car markets - both in products and in service.
Our panels are made from proper gauge steel and include all correct-as-original clips, tabs, flanges, bends and seams. Each time a prototype body panel comes off of a new tooling, we test fit it on a car. The marked up prototype is then used to change and improve the tools, and a new prototype is produced. This procedure might be repeated multiple times but, once the part is finally approved, you can be assured of a quality part.
