Outer tie rod end designed for 1950–1967 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury steering systems. This replacement part restores proper steering linkage connection at the wheel, maintaining alignment and safe handling. Machined steel construction with a precise 11/16" shank and 018 left-hand thread ensures a correct fit for vintage vehicles that used this specification. Built to resist wear and road stress, the unit helps eliminate play, reduce vibration, and extend the life of steering components. Ideal for restoration projects or routine maintenance where original-style fit and reliable performance are required.
Features:
  • Fits 1950–1967 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models (outer tie rod end, right/left hand applications).
  • 11/16" shank diameter with 018 left-hand thread to match original steering geometry.
  • Machined steel construction for durability and long service life.
  • Restores tight steering feel by replacing worn or loose outer tie rod ends.
  • Easy to install as a direct replacement part for restoration and maintenance projects.
  • Helps prevent uneven tire wear and reduces steering vibration.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Suggested Tools:
  • jack and jack stands
  • wheel chocks
  • lug wrench
  • adjustable wrench or correct size open-end wrenches
  • tie rod end puller (pickle fork optional)
  • torque wrench
  • needle-nose pliers
  • paint marker or tape (for alignment reference)
  • grease gun (if tie rod end is serviceable)
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels.
  2. Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and secure on jack stands, then remove the wheel.
  3. Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle and inspect for retaining components such as cotter pins or castle nuts.
  4. Mark the position of the tie rod end on the inner tie rod or measure thread engagement to preserve alignment; count turns when removing.
  5. Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or retaining nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
  6. Use a tie rod end puller or a pickle fork to separate the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle; avoid damaging the boot or knuckle.
  7. Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod and unscrew the outer tie rod end by the number of turns noted earlier to maintain approximate toe alignment.
  8. Install the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod, threading it to the marked position or matching the original number of turns. Tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end.
  9. Insert the tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque. Install a new cotter pin if required.
  10. If the tie rod end has a grease fitting, apply grease using a grease gun until the boot seats (do not overfill).
  11. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
  12. Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear.
