This idler arm is a direct-fit steering component designed for 1960–1966 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and cars. It supports the steering linkage, keeps the center link aligned, and maintains proper steering geometry for stable, predictable handling. Built for durability and reliable performance, the part restores worn steering feel, reduces play and vibration, and helps prevent uneven tire wear. It’s an ideal replacement for restoration projects or routine steering system maintenance.
Features:
  • Fits 1960-1966 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and cars (direct fit for stock steering boxes and center links).
  • Constructed from durable, heat-treated steel with corrosion-resistant coating for long service life.
  • Provides stable support for the steering center link to reduce play and improve steering response.
  • Includes a grease zerk for easy lubrication and extended bushing life (if applicable).
  • Easy direct-replacement design for restoration or maintenance of vintage vehicles.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 30-90 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • Hydraulic jack and jack stands or vehicle lift
  • Wheel chocks
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Wrenches
  • Ball joint/idler arm puller or tie rod separator
  • Torque wrench
  • Pliers (for cotter pins)
  • Grease gun (if equipped with grease zerk)
  • Penetrating oil
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, chock rear wheels, and loosen front lug nuts if wheels must be removed.
  2. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheel if it improves access.
  3. Locate the idler arm on the passenger side of the frame steering linkage and apply penetrating oil to mounting hardware.
  4. Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the nut securing the idler arm stud to the center link using an appropriate wrench or socket.
  5. Use a ball joint/idler arm puller or tie rod separator to disengage the idler arm stud from the center link. Do not use a hammer to strike the stud.
  6. Unbolt the idler arm mounting bolts from the frame. Keep track of any mounting brackets or shims for reinstallation.
  7. Compare new idler arm to the old unit to confirm correct orientation and length. Install the new idler arm onto the frame, securing bolts snugly but not fully torqued.
  8. Insert the idler arm stud into the center link, install the nut and tighten to the manufacturer-recommended torque. Install a new cotter pin if required.
  9. Torque the frame mounting bolts to specification and recheck all fasteners for proper tightness.
  10. If equipped with a grease fitting, apply a few pumps of multi-purpose chassis grease. Lower vehicle, reinstall wheel, and torque lug nuts to specification.
  11. Perform a visual check and a short test drive to confirm steering feels solid and there is no excessive play. If necessary, have steering alignment checked by a professional.
