The 1988-1991 Chevrolet / GMC Idler Arm (Std Design) is a direct-fit steering component engineered to support and stabilize the passenger-side of the center link, maintaining proper steering geometry and reducing play in the linkage. Designed for classic Chevy and GMC trucks and SUVs from 1988 through 1991, this idler arm restores tight, predictable steering feel, improves alignment longevity, and helps prevent premature tire wear. Constructed from durable materials and finished for corrosion resistance, it provides reliable performance for restoration and maintenance projects with straightforward installation.

  • Ball joint or pitman arm puller (if needed)
  • Pry bar

  • Penetrating oil
  • Safety glasses and gloves
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheel on the side being worked if necessary for access.
  3. Locate the idler arm on the passenger side of the center link. Apply penetrating oil to mounting nuts and studs and allow to soak if rusted.
  4. Support the center link with a jack or pry bar to relieve load on the idler arm.
  5. Remove the nut and cotter pin (if present) from the idler arm stud attached to the center link. Use a puller to separate the idler arm from the center link if it is stuck.
  6. Unbolt the idler arm mounting bolts at the frame bracket and remove the old idler arm assembly.
  7. Position the new idler arm in the bracket and thread mounting bolts by hand. Torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  8. Attach the idler arm stud to the center link, install the nut and torque to spec. Insert a new cotter pin where applicable.
  9. Lower the center link support, double-check all fasteners for proper torque, and ensure the idler arm moves freely without excessive play.
  10. Reinstall the wheel if removed, lower the vehicle from jack stands, and perform a steering check. Have a professional alignment performed after installation to ensure proper tracking and tire wear.
