Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, then raise the front and support with jack stands.
- Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod assembly.
- Mark the position of the outer tie rod on the stud or measure the number of turns to maintain alignment during reassembly.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut at the outer tie rod end; separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using a tie rod separator.
- Loosen the jam nut on the outer tie rod and unthread the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod (if removing the outer as part of replacement).
- Use the inner tie rod removal tool or appropriate socket to unthread the inner tie rod from the steering rack.
- Clean the rack and apply any recommended grease or anti-seize to threads if specified by vehicle procedures.
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it onto the rack to the specified engagement depth; tighten to the vehicle manufacturer’s torque specification.
- Reassemble the outer tie rod and adjust it to the previously marked position (or match the measured turns) to approximate alignment; tighten the jam nut.
- Reconnect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle, torque the nut to spec and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed as soon as possible to ensure correct toe and steering geometry.
