Outer left-hand tie rod end for 1981-1991 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs. This precision-machined steering component secures the outer end of the steering linkage to the steering knuckle, translating steering input into wheel movement while maintaining proper alignment and toe settings. Built for durability and dependable road performance, it restores tight, responsive steering and reduces play, vibration, and uneven tire wear. Ideal for restoration, maintenance, or direct replacement of worn factory parts.
Features:
- Fits 1981-1991 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs (outer left-hand tie rod end).
- Constructed from heat-treated steel with a corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
- Secures the steering linkage to the steering knuckle to maintain alignment and precise steering.
- Helps reduce steering play, vibration, and premature tire wear — ideal for restorative repairs.
- Includes a greaseable or sealed ball joint option (depending on SKU) for ease of maintenance.
- Designed for direct replacement of worn factory outer tie rod ends — simple swap installation.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, chock rear wheels, loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the outer left tie rod end at the steering knuckle and note the number of exposed threads or measure distance from a fixed point to preserve alignment.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod (do not remove) and unthread the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the measured amount to maintain alignment.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the knuckle.
- Unscrew and remove the old outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod. Compare the new part to the old one to confirm correct fitment.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the previously measured position, then tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end.
- Insert the tapered stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the nut to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque, and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- If the tie rod end is greaseable, apply grease until the boot swells slightly. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
- Tighten wheel lug nuts to the specified torque and perform a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible to ensure proper steering and tire wear.
