- Easy replacement for restoration or routine suspension/steering repairs
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle with a jack and secure with jack stands, then remove the wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle connected to the steering arm.
- Mark the position of the old tie rod end on the threaded inner tie rod with a marker to preserve alignment as a starting point.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod that secures the outer tie rod end (do not remove completely).
- Remove the cotter pin (if equipped) and loosen the castellated nut or retaining nut on the tie rod end stud.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or a pickle fork, then unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the marked position, then tighten the jam nut to secure the assembly.
- Insert the new tie rod stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque specification, and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque the lug nuts to specification, and check steering function.
- Because exact alignment can shift, have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure correct toe settings and prevent tire wear.
