Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 60-120 minutes
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly, raise vehicle with a jack, and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Locate the inner tie rod end on the steering rack and inspect the outer tie rod connection.
- Mark the position of the outer tie rod relative to the inner thread or count turns to preserve alignment settings for initial installation.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut (if equipped) securing the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle, then detach the outer tie rod using a puller or pickle fork.
- Loosen and remove any retaining hardware or clamps securing the steering rack boot and slide the boot back to expose the inner tie rod.
- Use an inner tie rod tool or appropriate adapter and a breaker bar/ratchet to loosen and remove the inner tie rod from the steering rack.
- Compare the new part to the old unit to ensure correct thread size and length. Apply thread lubricant if recommended by the vehicle service manual.
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it onto the rack to the marked or counted position, then torque to manufacturer specifications.
- Reposition and secure the steering rack boot and any clamps. Reconnect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to spec; install a new cotter pin if required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure correct steering geometry and tire wear.
