Instructions:
- Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels. Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle where it connects to the inner tie rod and steering arm.
- Mark the position of the old tie rod relative to the inner tie rod or measure and record the exposed thread length and number of turns to preserve toe alignment.
- Loosen the jam nut that secures the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod. Do not remove it yet.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or retaining nut on the tie rod end stud. Use penetrating oil if components are corroded.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or a pickle fork. Avoid excessive damage to surrounding components.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the recorded number of turns (or to the mark) and remove the old part.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the same position or thread count used earlier. Tighten the jam nut against the new outer tie rod end.
- Insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque, and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional alignment performed as soon as possible to ensure proper toe settings and prevent premature tire wear.
